Marchant breaks 12 year record at GCS Mumbles Duathlon 2023!

Mumbles Duathlon 2023 took place on Saturday 25th of March in the seaside town of Mumbles in Swansea. Athletes from all over the UK came to Knab Rock to challenge themselves in the scenic sprint distance duathlon, to relish the chance of crossing that red carpet finish line and experience that ultimate feeling of achievement.

Although the sun began to shine, due to blustery winds the athletes faced tough conditions on course. An incredible atmosphere at the start line gave athletes the perfect send off and an idea of what would await them at the finish.

First to complete the distance of 5km run, 32km bike and the final 5km run and now holding the 2023 Men’s Champion title is Lewys Winfield-Young, finishing with a fast time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 41 seconds.  An incredible race time by Lewys, however he missed breaking a new record by just 8 seconds! Luke Sullivan came in second with a time of 1 hour, 30 minutes and 8 seconds. Another close finish was Jonathan Phillips claiming third place with an incredible time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 34 seconds.

Taking the Women’s Champion title and breaking a course record which stood for 12 years is Emily Marchant, with an incredible time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and 27 seconds. After coming second in LCW Wales in 2022, it just shows what an inspirational athlete Emily is. Emily added “absolutely loved the event and really well organised and delivered.” In second place was Portia Rees-Jones with a finishing time of 1 hour, 53 minutes and 16 seconds and finishing in third place was Sarah Moody with a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 53 seconds.

The race was particularly special for the 30 athletes who participated in their first multi-sports event and a massive congratulations to all of them.

It was great to see so many athletes crossing the finish line with a huge smile and sense of achievement from smashing their own personal goals. The youngest athlete Morgan Willis aged 17 finished 12th overall. The “run with a loved one channel” was fully open and it was great to see so many youngsters experiencing the finish line feeling and helping make the race even more special for the athletes.

Gower College Swansea provided excellent post-race support as per usual with their rewarding sports massages. Their services were greatly appreciated by many.

Another memorable event in Mumbles and we look forward to returning on the 30th of September for the Mumbles Triathlon.
