What is a transition in triathlon?

Transition is the part of a triathlon where you switch from one discipline to the next. Transition 1 or T1 is the switch from swim to the bike, and Transition 2 or T2 is the switch from the bike to the run. Nailing your transitions can save you seconds, and in some cases even minutes. However a lot can go wrong if you are not prepared, causing stress and costing you time, a penalty or even an injury.

The better prepared you are for transitions the better they will go! Here are some solid transition tips to ensure you save time and stay calm on race day.

General Transition Tips

Practice before race day

Set up a mock transition at home or wherever suits you, and rehearse each step whether that's T1 or T2, the more you practice the better!

Keep it simple

Only have what you absolutely need in transition. Having too much gear will result in wasted time and more stress.

Lay everything out in order

Some athletes like to mark their own territory with a small towel, others like to use a bag, laying out everything in the order you will need to access them. However, you must keep your area as tidy as possible and respect your fellow competitors by not intruding on their space.

Have your gear ready to go

Have your running shoes facing the right way, your socks all ready in them (if you use socks). Have your helmet unclipped and open with water bottles and fuel already on your bike. Also ensure your bike is in the right gear to allow for a smooth getaway onto the course!

Visualisation

Mentally walk through T1 and T2. Find a relaxing space where you can focus and visualise on what you'll do when you get to your sport. Focus on the colours of equipment, some of the different scents you smell, the different sounds and how your equipment will feel as you change each time.

Memorise landmarks

Its important to know where your space is in transition to prevent any panic or stress as you come out the swim. Locate where the swim enters transition and familiarise yourself with where your bike will be located. Look around for a tree, specific banner, race number, anything that can help you find your spot with ease. DO NOT use the bikes around you as they might have left before you exit the swim!

Use elastic laces

Easy and great for a quick shoe change without tying knots.

Baby powder/body glide

Make it easy for you to take off and put on your gear.

Stick to what you know

When it comes to race day, its not the time to try new gear or try out a new order to put on your gear. Minimise the risk for anything to go wrong as much as you possibly can!

Transition 1 (T1) in focus

For many first-timers, T1 can feel very overwhelming- you're going from wet to dry, or water to wheels!

What happens in T1?

1. Swim exit

  • As you exit the water, its likely that you will feel a bit disorientated or dizzy, take your time!
  • Depending on the race you do, some races have a short run to T1, others its close or next to the swim exit. On your way, begin unzipping your wetsuit.
  • Leave your goggles and hat on your head to keep your hands free! Slide your arms out and let your wetsuit sit around your waist until you reach your bike spot.

2. Gearing up at your bike

  • Once you reach your bike, this is where you want to removed the rest of your wetsuit, cap and goggles.
  • You must always put your helmet on first and clip it up, this saves time and avoids any penalties.
  • Put on any accessories too such as bottles, sunglasses or nutrition, but we recommend you do this before the race starts.
  • Put on your bike shoes (unless your shoes are already clipped on) and unhook your bike from the racking.

3. Wheel bike to the mount line

  • Once you are all kitted up, make your way to the mount line with your bike, hold your bike by the saddle or handlebars.
  • DO NOT mount your bike in transition or before the mount line, this can result in a penalty. Push your bike so its clearly past the line, hop on and off you go!

Transition 2 (T2) in focus

T2 is where you transition from the bike leg to the run leg. This is usually the simpler of the two transition but still requires just as much prep.

What happens in T2?

1. Bike dismount

  • All athletes must dismount their bikes before a designated dismount line before re-entering transition. You should practice slipping your feet out of your cycling shoes or remove your shoes before the dismount line to make for a smooth dismount.
  • Wheel your bike back into transition, back to your spot and re-rack your bike via the saddle or handlebars, and remove your helmet.

2. Bike kit to run kit

  • Now you are ready to change into your running kit! Slip on run shoes are highly recommended as are elastic laces.
  • Accessories such as sunglasses, cap, nutrition and your race belt can be grabbed as you leave and be put on as you make your exit.

3. Exit onto the Run

  • Athletes can begin running straight from your transition sport towards transition exit.
  • It is very common for athletes to suffer from wobbly legs exiting T2, if so take your time and walk to the run exit and find your rhythm once your on the course.

Final Thoughts

Transitions might seem like a small part of the race, but they play a big role in your overall experience. With a little practice and preparation, you can move through them confidently and efficiently.

Remember: It’s okay to be slow — just be smooth and stay focused. Speed comes with experience.

You're about to do something amazing — your first triathlon! Trust your training, enjoy the experience, and smile as you cross each stage. Transition might just become your secret weapon.
