‘It’s getting colder & the weather is changing’

For most of us the open water swimming season is coming to an end or is basically over. In October the UK water temperature in the sea, lakes & reservoirs are dropping rapidly and where you were able to swim in 17 to 20 degrees its now more like 12 or 13oc.

The outside air temperature is also dropping quickly so if you do go for a swim during the autumn, it does feel like you can cope with the colder waters more easily.

If you are still considering an outdoor swim in October, then here are some key tips to ensure you’re preparing yourself properly.

  1. Where are you swimming? – Plan your session. You won’t be able to complete the same session you did 2 months ago due to the colder water.
  2. How long are you swimming for?
  3. What are you wearing? thermal wetsuit? Double hat? Gloves? Boots?
  4. Never swim alone. Who is your buddy?
  5. Make sure you have warm clothes and a hot drink for when you get out.
